What is Ethereum?

Ethereum is a programmable blockchain launched in 2015. Besides transferring value, it runs smart contracts (programs that execute exactly as written). These power decentralized finance (DeFi), stablecoins, NFTs and thousands of tokens built on the ERC-20 standard.

Ether (ETH) is the native currency of Ethereum and is used to pay transaction fees ("gas"). Since September 2022 ("The Merge") Ethereum is secured by Proof of Stake instead of mining, which cut its energy use dramatically. ETH has no fixed maximum supply; part of every transaction fee is burned.
