What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is the first decentralized cryptocurrency. It was described in a 2008 white paper by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto and its network went live in January 2009. Bitcoin lets people send value over the internet without a bank or central operator; transactions are recorded on a public blockchain secured by miners using Proof of Work.

The supply of bitcoin is capped at 21 million coins. New coins are issued as block rewards, and the reward is cut in half roughly every four years (every 210,000 blocks) in an event called the halving. Because of its fixed supply and long track record, many people see bitcoin as "digital gold".
